Been there, Thai'd that

Today, we had our third Thai language lesson at ISDSI. We reviewed material from our past classes and learned a plethora of new words. Everywhere we visit we are able to apply our new Thai skills. Learning the Thai language has given us a better understanding and appreciation for the Thai culture. Thai is quite different from English, so it is a challenge to us all - but we’re catching on!

After lunch, we had the privilege of hearing from a veterinarian. His lecture focused on biodiversity and the interconnection between wildlife and human health. He emphasized the influence that animal health, human health, and the environment have upon each other. In Thailand, there are more interactions between wildlife and humans so there is more collaboration between vets and medical doctors. We learned about the stages of pathogen transmission to humans as well, including agent, primary infection, limited outbreak, long outbreak, and exclusive human agent. In order to have an effective wildlife disease management program, it is imperative to have communication, education, and surveillance.

For the final course, we went to a little place that only sold pad thai. Our options were small, medium, or omelette (pad thai covered in an egg). Pad thai is one of Thailand’s national dishes and usually consists of stir-fried noodles, a choice of protein, egg, bean sprouts, spices, and more! Not only was the food delectable, but it gave us an authentic Thai experience. People from all over have come to enjoy this pad thai and leave fulfilled and happy!

None of these experiences would be as wonderful if it weren’t for the people who came. We are learning so much about each other and growing closer every day.

Good Thai-dings,
Lia and Savannah
